Shut up and Perform

Charles Colson writes of the free speech ban on athletes at the next Olympics put in place by the Chinese government. This communist regime is repressive and inhumane, and it has designs on the world.

Maybe the trade policy that the U.S. had adopted with China has the goal of China's democratization in the long term, and maybe I am just too dumb to see our government's long term strategy.

But in the short term, it is hard to understand and condone the fact that China ranks amongst the top 5 trading partners of the United States (no. 2 in December 2007, according to census data), is the country with which we have the largest trade deficit, and holds over a trillion dollars of our debt, while we close both eyes on the fact that the Chinese government is one of the main culprits of human rights abuses in the world.

But I guess you cannot really wag your index finger at other countries about human rights abuses when you are involved in torture, extraordinary rendition, and illegal spying yourself.

I guess it's too much to hope that the US will decide to sit out the Olympics this time.

Along with having to shut up, do they also have to wear head covering?
