A Philosopher Worth Knowing About
The Philosophers Magazine features an interview with Roger Scruton, an important contemporary philosopher who has written on subjects as diverse as modern philosophy, aesthetics, animal rights, Islam and the West, conservatism, and popular culture, and sexuality. He has been a staunch defender of high culture, but has not rooted it in transcendent realities. See his book, The Intelligent Person's Guide to Culture and Culture Counts. However, this interview indicates that he may be moving back toward Christianity. One hopes.
His chapter "The Philosophy of Wine" is also a fine, fine read in the book Questions of Taste: The Philosophy of Wine. Anyone who enjoys the brilliance of vino has got to consider the beauties of Christ at some point!

Have you read Scruton's memoir Gentle Regrets? Is it any good?
ReplyDeleteMy son read Scruton's little book on Kant and said he really accomplished the goal of making Kant understandable (quite a task!).
