The Second Coming in Pop Culture

This from a friend. It is taken from a textbook he used in college in 1960.

Ernest Van Den Haag wrote this. "In popular culture, even the Second Coming would be just another barren thrill to be watched on television till Milton Berle came on."

That is very sad.

While this could be true from a societal view and I get the point, I think the Second Coming from a pure "power of the event standpoint" will be way too powerful and shocking to be brushed off.

Doc G: I've heard you say "what does awesome mean anyway?" - well, I think the Second Coming will be awesome.

I see the point, but, of course, the Second Coming will indeed capture attention, and not in the sense of just another form of entertainment. I'm reminded of this brief excerpt from the end of Book II, Chapter 5 of Mere Christianity:

"God will invade. But I wonder whether people who ask God to interfere openly and directly in our world quite realise what it will be like when He does. When that happens, it is the end of the world ... what is the good of saying you are on His side then, when you see the whole natural universe melting away like a dream ... For this time it will be God without disguise; something so overwhelming that it will strike either irresistible love or irresistible horror into every creature. It will be too late then to choose your side."

We've all seen the end of the world come so many times as couch potatoes, snacking away on junkfood, haven't we?

But the second coming will instantly expose our entertainment-infested consumerism culture as the virtual reality we should have come away from a long time ago!
