I've had it with AOL. In the last few weeks I've seen photos of a woman grabbing another woman's breasts on TV and just now of two celebrity women kissing each other. (I was looking for the weather both times.) What is an alternative service that does not have this kind of idiotic obscenity?
Truly, too many Americans have lost the ability to blush--a prelude to judgment if not repented of. Read Francis Schaeffer's Death in the City on the judgment of God against the West and what this means for Christians. We need more weeping prophets (like Jeremiah adn Schaeffer), not wimpy puppets. See Jeremiah 20:9.

When I dumped AOL nine years ago, after they introduced unlimited dial up minutes (remember those?) that effectively jammed their phone lines, I found that almost any internet service provider could do what AOL did, but without the splashy welcome screen.
Switch to Earthlink or some other provider. You'll be glad you did.
You may also want to download a free pop-up blocker.
Not sure if you're looking for a new ISP or simply a new homepage where you can get info like weather, headlines, etc. But either way, I'd recommend using Google's personalized homepage, precisely because they don't show images like that.
You might find some of my suggestions in this post to be helpful: Tip for Safer Surfing.
The best site I have found for weather is:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/
It has all storm advisories available to read when they are posted.
No advertisements, or at least I haven't noticed any.
I can (and will) set your computer up to get your AOL email through Outlook so you don't have to change your email address!

DG,
There is absolutely no need for anyone to have a mediatory service like AOL or Earthlink or what-not. It's just extra money every month on top of your internet service provider (comcast or qwest?). They make you think you need them, but you don't. Whatever service you have to your home that provides your internet access is enough. If you use comcast, comcast already provides email and you dont need a "home page" or all that (though comcast will make you think you do). You will need to change your email addresses if you dump AOL but that's the only change you'll need to deal with. Email is free with gmail or yahoo (what I use)or, as I mentioned, comcast provides email. Fletcher has a good idea if you feel you must for some reason hang on to AOL.
If I read Dr. Groothuis original post correctly, he is not so much in search of a way to avoid seeing questionable images, which can be achieved somewhat effectively by using parental controls available in most Internet security software. Rather, it seems to me he would rather not give money to an ISP which he considers immoral for the content it publishes. If so, then look up http://www.christianbroadband.com/
It is listed as a Christian ISP. If that does not seem suitable, or if broadband service is not available at your location, you may want to go to google and use "+Christian +ISP" as criteria. Just some ideas...
AOL no longer charges people for using their email accounts and/or software. Groothuis' ISP is actually Qwest, but they have held on to AOL for the email address. We can configure Outlook to connect to AOL's mail servers using IMAP4, thereby bypassing all AOL applications but still enabling them to retain their AOL email addresses.
We can then just use IE (or Firefox) and use the pop-up blockers.
Fletcher is the Man!
AOL has been hemorrhaging subscribers for years, and their business strategy has moved to aggressive and underhanded customer retention strategies. AOL is completely useless and overpriced.
