On Sunday, December 6, at 7:00 PM, I will be a guest on Backbone Radio (AM, 710 KNUS) to discuss The Manhattan Declaration, an important statement of principle related to the sanctity of human life, monogamous marriage, and freedom of religion.
This is more than a statement of ideas; it is declaration of principled resistance against the imposition of immoral programs and demands by the state.
Perhaps you can help me understand this declaration a little better. I'm thinking of two hospitals, both are private, and both receive some federal funds.
ReplyDeleteOne is Catholic and does not want to hire openly gay staff. This declaration seems to support the hospitals' choice to not hire people who do not share their views.
The other hospital performs abortions and does not want to hire staff who refuse duties that are connected to abortions (providing a referral or cleaning a patient room). In this case the declaration supports the individual's freedom of conscience.
Which is it? It sounds like the game is "the Christian's rights win" but maybe I'm missing something.
Doug:
ReplyDeleteHave you seen John Stackhouse's dissenting position? He raises some good points, but overall I dissent from his dissension. See http://stackblog.wordpress.com/2009/11/22/the-manhattan-declaration-a-waste-of-everybodys-time/
What do you make of the controversy surrounding it, Doug? I am not willing to sign it, personally, for the reasons espoused by the likes of John MacArthur and Alistair Begg, but I do respect many who chose to sign. What's your take--on their take?
