Who, Me?

There is a "Doug Groothuis Appreciation Society" on Facebook, someone has told me. So far, there are seven members, all of which, I believe, are convicted fellons.

Believe me, it is not my idea. Can anyone explain this to me? Not that I take Facebook that seriously, of course. Somehow, I think the honor is not quite up there with giving the Gifford Lectures or winning the Templeton Award for Progress in Religion.

  1. Well it proves that you have at least 9 readers - those seven, myself, and I'm guessing your wife (?).

You're also right up there with Gordon Fee. Someone created a group for him too. Not bad.

  2. My wife hardly ever reads my blog; when she does, she finds typos.

Oh Lord… I tried a facebook page for about 3 weeks to keep in touch with my nephew at West Point…Until some of my “friends” started sending me quizzes to take and “ice cream” and “Easter eggs”…I promptly canceled the whole thing.

I guess that this is fun for people with cell phones who enjoy texting each other…but I give it a great big *WHATEVER*

  4. The Gifford Lectures and the Templeton Prize - those are two of my "pie in the sky" career goals. The third is to be appointed to the Andreas Idreos Chair of Science and Religion at Oxford University. As Alister McGrath once said to me in his inimitable British accent, "Oh my dear child, you aim so low!"

    What's the matter, don't you like ice-cream?

  6. I suppose I'm only an occasional "facebooker," but when a fellow student sent me the invitation to join this page, I couldn't resist.

I'm just surprised it took you this long to find out, Dr. G. It's been going for at least a year now.

  7. I recently posted this Neil Postman quote to my blog and to Facebook: "Will the computer raise egocentrism to the status of a virtue?" Technopoly (1992) Based on much of what I've seen on social networking tools, his quote was prescient.

  8. The page is less "celebrity gossip/worship" and much more "scholarly info & appreciation", and contains various links to published works, audio clips of your teachings (along with notes), and the like. The page mostly functions as an easy way to link back to some of your material. Perhaps some unsuspecting user might stumble on the info, explore the links, and be drawn to a deeper faith through the work of the Holy Spirit expressed in your lectures and articles.
