Blog Fumigation

I just discovered that a white racist was putting comments on my post about Obama's Muslim upbringing. I had not checked the thread for a few days and didn't know what was going on. He is now banned and I have a fuller explanation posted in that discussion. Consider it a fumigation.

For the record, I have nothing but contempt and loathing for all white supremacist ideas, individuals, or organizations. My beef with Obama concerns his ideology and character, not his skin color. I was sincerely hoping that Condoleeza Rice would run for president. I would have supported her. All people are made in God's image and likeness, all are sinners, all need the grace of God in Christ, and all can be used for Kingdom purposes as they submit to God.

I have closed comments on the recent Obama post. But simply because a racist (or someone posing as such to try to make me look bad) tried to hijack The Constructive Curmudgeon doesn't mean I won't continue to critique Barack Obama.

--as well you shouldn't! That would be an easy way to shut people up, wouldn't it?

Interesting that you'd have supported Rice. She'd have gotten about the level of support McCain can get from me, except that McCain is at least stolidly opposed to abortion. My "level of support" for McCain being "tepid," but blazing hot by comparison with my level of toleration for Obama....

I don't think anyone here thinks it is out of line for you to criticize Obama. What some of us objected to in your apparent support of Pipes' column was that his criticism was so lame. The evidence he cited just didn't support the claim that Obama was being dishonest in saying he was never a Muslim.

Criticize Obama all you want but make sure that you're not just endorsing the faulty reasoning of a spin meister.

I did not find the evidence lame, Tom. Pipes is not an extremist.

But even if Pipes is completely wrong, there is still plenty of good evidence against Obama.

Condoleeza Rice is pro-choice.

Doug,

I'm a registered Republican and have no intention of voting for Obama, and even I recognized that Pipes' argument was quite weak. All the evidence was circumstantial and could be plausibly explained away by Obama with little difficulty.

Most everyone seems to understand that Pipes' claim is not that Obama is currently a Muslim. If he was claiming that, it would be much easier to verify its truth or falsity.

Part of what makes Pipes' actual claim difficult to substantiate is that it refers to features of Obama's upbringing, some of which he had little control over.

The other factor is that even that which he did have control over merely points to external features which don't necessarily reflect the requisite internal commitment.

While clearly Obama would have motivation to be dishonest about whether he was once a Muslim, these insights compel me to error on the side of taking him at his word.

That strikes me as a fair approach to this issue. But I still won't vote for him in November!

Dr. G:

In a 2005 interview with the Washington Times, Rice stated that, "I've called myself at times mildly pro-choice." You read the entire piece here, but she also says she is a libertarian on the issue of abortion.

It’s also worth noting that when McCain ran for President in 2000, he said the following:

"I'd love to see a point where it [abortion] is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations."

He also said that abortion would not be a litmus test for his Supreme Court nominees or a potential running mate.

Dr. Groothuis, Rice supports abortion on demand. This is settled fact among all the conservative pundits I read, and there are (as mentioned by others) the public statements to prove it.

When I say she could get tepid support from me, I mean I would rather deal with her than Obama, who is obviously much, much worse on this and nearly every other issue. But don't confuse "worked in the Bush Administration" with "conservative"--there's precious little real overlap, there.

"If you are in any sense pro-life (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or other), how can you vote for this "abortion absolutist"?"

AND

"I was sincerely hoping that Condoleeza Rice [a pro-choicer] would run for president. I would have supported her."

But she probably would have changed her position to convince mindless fundamentalists that she was the Messiah.
