Break

Given the low level of much of the "discussion" (that is, pointless insults) on this blog of late, I'm taking an indefinite holiday.

Doug,
I've enjoyed and always looked forward to your posts. Don't let the trolls get you down. (First SA, the Philosophical Pastor takes a break...and then you. Is there something in the water in your neck of the woods!)

Please, please don't stop because of the trolls! I don't comment, but that's because ... uhm... I don't want to invite the attention of trolls.

I suggest just turning off comments, but don't throw in the towel on account of the peanut gallery.

Just as all music is made up of sound and silence, so too must our lives consist of the same.

Enjoy the silence, my friend, and ignore the sound (especially the pointless type).

Dr. Groothuis,

Don’t let those people bring you down. They almost seem like the type of people that (unfortunately) can’t imagine that Christians can be great intellectuals. You are clearly a leading and influential intellectual for a variety of different reasons. Some people just can’t take the fact that there are a lot of leading Christian thinkers these days. Those people don’t know how to react properly to the situation. It would be beneficial to put part of what I wrote below on your November 11 post. Leading thinker J.P. Moreland wrote, “This [Truth Decay] is the best, most accessible treatment of postmodernism available.” Various aspects of your book (Truth Decay) and your thinking are clearly leading and respected.

I found that the interface with "blogger" doesn't give the author of the blog enough control to manage the comments efficiently or effectively. You might consider switching to wordpress or moveabletype or some other excellent blogging platform. If you'd like a hand in getting things set up, I'd gladly volunteer my skills to help you launch a new blog.

It is unfortunate that some people resort to insults when confronted with a serious argument. Most people who read your blog are able to recognize this behavior for what it is, and you shouldn't be discouraged, Dr Groothuis. As a long-time blogger myself, I do know that it is healthy to take periodic breaks from this little hobby.

Dr. Groothuis,

Please let it be a "break" and not "goodbye". The fact you're drawing unfortunate comments is a sign you've "arrived" as a blogger.

Please take this as an honest question and not just a lame attempt to bait you: Would you have your students walk away from a forum in which they can promote the life of the Christian mind? If so, under what circumstances?

I subscribe to you on my Google Reader, so I don't actually read your comments. I also don't usually comment on blogs. However, I did think it worth making an exception to tell you that I appreciate your blog.

Well, I'm catching up on my reading and the fact that I have 4 more of your posts to get through at this point indicates that you may not have thrown in the towel.

For what it's worth, I find much of what you write here of value to me. Thanks.
