Marriage Down; Morals Down

[The decline of marriage is one of the most significant indicators of cultural bone rot. Marriage is the first institution of creation, designed and organized by God himself. See Genesis 2 and Matthew 19:4-5. No, not all are called to marriage; but sexual intimacy finds its only true home there. Marriage is the ideal place for children to be raised (not merely grow up).

The fact that so many cohabitate (shack up) without benefit of marriage, that so many come into this world as illegitimate children, and that many push for same-sex unions as "marriage" bespeaks ill of our entire civilation. America is spurning what was created for our good and God's glory. And we call it "freedom."

But the Wisdom of God declares:

35 For those who find me find life
and receive favor from the LORD.

36 But those who fail to find me harm themselves;
all who hate me love death." (Proverbs 8:35-36)]

To Be Married Means to Be Outnumbered

SAM ROBERTS

Married couples, whose numbers have been declining for decades as a proportion of American households, have finally slipped into a minority, according to an analysis of new census figures by The New York Times.

The American Community Survey, released this month by the Census Bureau, found that 49.7 percent, or 55.2 million, of the nation’s 111.1 million households in 2005 were made up of married couples — with and without children — just shy of a majority and down from more than 52 percent five years earlier. . . .

"Marriage down; Morals Down" seems like an entirely gratuitous assumption to make.
Would you take some time to back up your statement? Morals down: in what respect? Even if you could prove that morals are down in comparison to an arbitrarily-established point of reference, how can you precisely correlate the supposed decrease in morality with a decline in marriage rates? Couldn't you establish an analogous correspondence between a decrease in morality and an increase in divorce rates? What is the point of such sweeping statements, without providing any evidence to back them up?

The point of reference is Biblical teaching on marriage. More people are living together without being married. Many children are born out of wedlock. Divorce rates are also high, which shows a similar problem of not honoring the marriage commitment.

So "morals down" is in direct correlation to people not sticking to the Bible's teachings? No actual measurement of morality is demanded other than adherence or departure from Biblical standards? That may hold true for believers, but it does not make sense for non-believers. For a person who does not believe, morals never rise or decline based on adherence to Biblical standards.

Couldn't we also say that morals are down because people do not enact Christ's teachings on properly disposing of material possessions and helping the poor?
